Not so long ago, in Soviet society, the possibility of a positive attitude towards religion was completely denied. For open confession of any religious doctrine, a person could not receive a full higher education, take leadership positions, and so on. In general, such a person was completely limited in his rights. On the one hand, this was due to prejudice against religion and ignorance of political forces on the other.

A mandatory subject in education at the time was scientific atheism, which promoted a critical attitude toward religion and its followers, an atheistic view of the world, and so on. Any positive mention of religion in the audience was necessarily accompanied by a sharp negative assessment.

Today, the situation in the so-called post-Soviet society is different. Not only religious actions, but also many secular authors emphasize that only faith in God can ensure the spiritual revival of society. Religion is increasingly entering our lives. There is a rapid increase in the number of non-traditional Churches. Ukrainian legislation emphasizes that freedom of conscience is an integral part of our life in society. Everyone will probably agree that many mistakes in solving religious issues are made by the state due to ignorance, and therefore religion, as a worldview phenomenon, should become the object of purposeful study. In addition, the transfer of knowledge as a universal experience of life – a necessary condition for the viability of society.

That is why the ruling forces have always controlled the amount and content of knowledge that people received in educational institutions. Thus, in the Middle Ages, the central cognitive postulate was the concept of God, with which all cultural values ​​were compared. And already in the Renaissance there was a process of secularization of society, which began to evolve, and in the early twentieth century, the idea of ​​the dominance of reason, which reveals the "inferiority of faith" is spreading among naturalist philosophers.

Recently, the issue of introducing the Law of God in schools and theology as a compulsory discipline in schools has been increasingly raised in the media and in letters to state bodies. In some places, the leadership of educational institutions, ignoring the principle of secular education, enshrined in Ukraine by its Constitution and current legislation, spontaneously introduced the teaching of religious courses, involving unprepared for pedagogical work cultists, various preachers.

The Ministry of Education of Ukraine has found that in a number of public schools there are facts of spontaneous introduction of the Law of God or the Catechism, which violates the Constitution, in particular the principle of secular nature of public education. In addition, there is a widespread belief among church leaders that schools should teach the doctrine of the church that is dominant in the region or that "owns the canonical land."

This approach is unacceptable because it leads to discrimination in the field of religious education, its politicization, the forcible planting of a particular religion and, finally, human rights violations in general. The study of religion in the system of religious education must comply with current legislation, as well as international legal instruments in the field of religion.

Religious education should not be equated or replaced with theological (theological). The latter, like the atheistic one, is ideologically engaged and at the same time confessionally oriented. The organization of theological education in the system of public educational institutions contradicts the principles of secular education, separation of the Church from the state and public school from the Church (which will be discussed below), and may lead to further escalation of disputes and conflicts at the ideological and confessional levels. Modern world and Ukrainian legislation contains a number of laws that provide legal protection of freedom of conscience and religion of citizens.
